To mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Austria and Slovakia, Andorra’s Prime Minister, Xavier Espot Zamora, visited Vienna at the end of May 2026. He was welcomed by Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker. During the visit, a double taxation agreement was signed to strengthen economic cooperation. The Andorran Prime Minister also met with the acting OSCE Director, Hatun Demirer, to mark the 30th anniversary of Andorra’s full membership of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Focus on housing during discussions with the City of Vienna
The Andorran delegation met with representatives of the Vienna City Administration. The meeting focused on social housing and urban development. Omar Al-Rawi, Member of the Vienna City Council and of the Vienna Provincial Parliament, who chairs the City Council Committee for Urban Development, Mobility and Vienna Public Utilities, together with Kurt Hofstetter, a housing expert from the Department of Housing Promotion and Arbitration Board for Legal Housing Matters, explained various aspects of the Vienna Model, which is internationally recognised as a showcase model for social housing. The meeting provided an opportunity for an exchange of information on affordable housing, and particularly, regarding the return of tourist apartments to the regular housing market.
Andorra – a gem in the heart of the Pyrenees
Situated in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, this co-principality covers an area of around 470 square kilometres. Its co-princes are the Bishop of Urgell and the President of the French Republic. Andorra has a unique political system that dates back to 1278. Catalan is the official language of this country, which has a population of around 90,000. Winter tourism plays a central role in the economy, accounting for the majority of the 9 million tourists who visit each year. This mountainous nation is also committed to effective climate protection and inclusive, people-centred multilateralism, in which smaller states should also play an important role.
