Soldiers of the Special Operations Command carried out parachute jumps from an altitude of 3,000 meters. Conducting jumps from one of NATO’s most important strategic airlift assets is a rare opportunity and provided the soldiers with extremely valuable international-level training and skills development, writes honvedelem.hu.
As Hungarian soldiers had not participated in a similar exercise for several years, this training was of enormous importance, said Captain Anikó Fábián. The head of the Special Air Operations Support Department of the Hungarian Defense Forces Special Operations Command explained that after cooperation with the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) was revived, a long and persistent planning phase followed.
The HAW carries out missions jointly with personnel from 12 NATO member states.
The HAW’s Boeing C-17 aircraft play an important role in maintaining the military capabilities of the Alliance and its partner countries.

The C-17 Globemaster III is capable of rapidly transporting combat vehicles and more than one hundred soldiers, along with their equipment, to an operational area, including across intercontinental distances when required.

A special feature of the aircraft is its ability to operate from short and even unpaved runways. Through aerial refueling, it can achieve a virtually unlimited range. In addition to military missions, it is also regularly used for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
Parachute insertion can provide precise support for various troop movements during special operations, including in hard-to-reach locations.
This allows soldiers to approach the target area very quickly, for instance in forested or mountainous terrain or in areas lacking infrastructure. Parachute operations also enable covert infiltration into hostile territory while maintaining rapid response capability and the element of surprise.

“By using ram-air parachutes, soldiers can reach their designated target area with greater precision and maneuverability,” Captain Fábián added, emphasizing the significance of the exercise for Hungarian troops.
The organizers and participants of the successful exercise were able to exchange experiences and knowledge, while the training and further development of the Hungarian Defense Forces’ parachute contingent will continue.
