The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to hold a public hearing to discuss raising the age for free subway rides to 70 and introducing free bus rides for seniors, as it seeks to revamp existing transportation policies and enhance mobility rights for older adults.

On Monday, the city issued a statement in response to a letter from the Seoul Metropolitan Union of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, which proposed a public hearing to address public transportation policies for seniors.

This policy is among the key pledges made by Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who promised to redesign the senior transportation welfare system to better reflect the aging population and changing travel patterns.

The seniors’ association expressed its support for Mayor Oh’s proposal to exempt seniors aged 70 and older from bus fares and requested that this be implemented promptly.

The city plans to co-host the public hearing with the association and will announce the time and location on the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s website.
