COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The June 6 weekend hosted two major sports events, which brought an influx of visitors and millions of dollars to Aggieland.
Summertime is generally a slow time in Bryan-College Station, which is why big events like the FIFA soccer friendly and USA Track and Field Lone Star Grand Prix are so important. Both events were held on the same day, which helped boost the local economy.
Visit College Station’s Assistant Director of Tourism, Jeremiah Cook, said these events can help bring more people to town during a slow season.
“Super exciting to have had these great events in town,” Cook exclaimed. “Any time that we can bring a football-sized weekend into a non-football season, it’s really great for our local economy.”
Cook said about 70,000 people came in from out of town for the soccer match alone, which drew in millions of dollars.
“We’re projecting that the soccer match had about a $12.2 million direct economic impact to our community, and so, that’s really large,” Cook said.
The influx of visitors helped fill local hotels, such as the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center. The hotel shared a statement describing the June 6 weekend as “a strong weekend for our hotel with occupancy and room rates exceeding typical levels”.

Cook said events like these help the local economy when students are gone for the summer.
“We understand that our local economy churns off of 75,000 students, and when those 75,000 leave for the summer, we need other things to help gather and pull those together, and so, that’s what’s really exciting about these events happening in May and June,” Cook remarked.
Visit College Station said Dave Campbell’s 7 on 7 and the Games of Texas are expected to bring more visitors to Aggieland.
