The government has concluded that the prosecution will not be granted the right to conduct supplementary investigations.
Prime Minister Kim Min-seok informed reporters at a briefing on Thursday that the central principle of the Lee Jae Myung administration’s prosecution reform initiative is the separation of the investigation and indictment functions.
He emphasized that the government’s stance is final.
The prime minister stressed that the core goals of the government’s reform efforts are to restore the prosecution’s authority in a more reasonable manner and to better protect people’s fundamental rights.
Kim said the government will communicate its position to the National Assembly but will not propose a new bill.
The debate over whether to allow the prosecution to conduct supplementary investigations or to eliminate all of its investigative powers has become a contentious issue.
The ruling Democratic Party advocates abolishing these rights entirely, while the opposition warns that doing so could lead to serious consequences.
