NETHERLANDS — The Netherlands issued its first code red warning for extreme heat as a wider heat wave pushed temperatures up to 104 degrees and disrupted daily life across Europe.
The alert covered almost the entire Netherlands, and many schools closed as the heat intensified.
Across Europe, the heat wave brought more disruptions. In France, officials banned alcohol and mass gatherings did not take place.
In Germany, road surfaces melted. In Sweden, rail tracks twisted.
Scientists said the heat wave began on June 20 and was the worst recorded in Europe.
