Bild says a German rail failure exposed NATO logistics risks, showing weak readiness for troop movements, drone threats and reserve routes in a crisis.
A recent disruption on Germany’s railway network exposed the vulnerability of the country’s transport infrastructure in the event of a possible war, according to observers at Bild.
The authors noted that, in a conflict scenario, Germany is expected to serve as one of NATO’s key logistics hubs. The alliance would rely on German territory to move weapons and personnel quickly toward its eastern flank.
Bild cited Professor Christian Böttger as saying that, in an emergency, the Bundeswehr would not be able to rely on the railway system. According to him, the rail network is not yet ready for such a scenario, and company staff have not been properly trained.
The publication argues that both infrastructure and personnel may be poorly prepared for modern threats, including drones appearing above dispatch centers. The observers also stressed the need to plan reserve routes and bypass lines in advance, in case main transport corridors are destroyed or blocked during combat operations.
Earlier, Deutsche Bahn temporarily halted train traffic across Germany because of a major failure in its digital radio system. According to media reports, the large-scale disruption was caused by technical problems during a communications system update.
