The Charlotte Hornets acquired Dorian Finney-Smith from the Houston Rockets Friday afternoon, landing the “3-and-D” forward at no cost. The Rockets also sent three second-round picks (2027 MEM, 2028 HOU and 2033 HOU) over to make the deal happen. Of all the second-round picks, the 2027 selection would likely be the most valuable, as the Grizzlies have low expectations heading into the 2026-27 season.
As for Finney-Smith, although the 10-year veteran is coming off the worst season of his career a year ago, if he can return to form, his perimeter defense would be a worthwhile addition for the Hornets. Throughout his career, the former Florida Gator averages eight points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.4 blocks while shooting 35.9% from 3-point range. Finney-Smith has three years remaining on his deal, but only this year is guaranteed. The trade nearly eats up the entirety of Charlotte’s mid-level exception, but the franchise still has a $40.7 million trade exception from dealing LaMelo Ball earlier this summer.
