SK plans to invest 140 trillion won in the Gyeongsang region to create Asia’s largest artificial intelligence(AI) hub, or roughly 91 and a half billion U.S. dollars.
SK Telecom CEO Jung Jai-hun announced the investment plan in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, on Friday during a public briefing on visions for the development of high-tech industries in the region, which includes the two Gyeongsang provinces and the metropolitan cities of Busan, Daegu and Ulsan.
The latest plan is part of the government’s three mega investment projects aimed at balanced regional development.
As part of the plan, SK has begun building a hyperscale AI data center with a capacity of 100 megawatts in Ulsan and plans to add another center there with a capacity of 900 megawatts.
It will also build an AI data center with a capacity of at least one gigawatt elsewhere in the Gyeongsang region.
The company plans to have centers operating with a combined total of five gigawatts by 2029, with the aim of expanding its AI data center infrastructure to a nationwide capacity of 15 gigawatts over the mid- to long term.
