Some federal grant funding will help the city renovate a historic property for a new use.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded more than $1.7 million to renovate 351 Holbrook St. and create the Cunningham and Hughes Neighborhood Development Center.
The building has been home to Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home for years.
“Sustained economic growth and access to affordable housing are mutually reinforcing priorities that shape the well-being of American families and the competitiveness of the national economy,” HUD said in its award letter.
The new center will include offices for the Danville Neighborhood Development Corp., a community center, two upper-level residential units and a lower-level garage for maintenance equipment.
The building is part of the Holbrook-Ross Historic District.
The Fiscal Year 2026 Consolidated Appropriations Act provides a total of $3.62 billion in Economic Development Initiative-Community Project Funding, supporting more than 2,200 projects across the country.
“Advancing projects that stimulate job creation, attract private investment, and expand housing supply is critical to bringing tangible benefits to working families and communities,” HUD said.
