The Netherlands is preparing to unveil a massive wave of defense spending in a direct nod to demands from across the Atlantic.
Dutch Defence Minister Dilan Yesilgoz revealed that the Netherlands will announce more than €3 billion ($3.43 billion) in fresh defense deals and concrete plans at a NATO forum in Ankara. The major announcement precedes a highly anticipated summit of the alliance’s political leaders, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.
According to Yesilgoz, the upcoming multi-billion euro package will feature critical military partnerships, including an air defense collaboration with Belgium and a naval ship agreement with Britain. The Dutch government is also looking to lock in more joint military projects with Germany.
The flurry of high-profile defense announcements from NATO members is widely seen as a strategic move to show U.S. President Donald Trump that Europe is taking its own security spending seriously. Trump, who has frequently questioned the U.S. commitment to the alliance, will join the leaders of NATO’s 31 other member nations for the summit.
When pressed on whether she feels confident the U.S. will stay committed to NATO under Trump’s leadership, Yesilgoz noted that the alliance relies on mutual safety. However, she emphasized a growing reality for the continent: it is healthy for Europe to invest heavily in its own defense industries, regardless of who is sitting in the White House.
