The new traffic organisation will come into effect on 12 July at 23:00. The main phase of the works is scheduled to be completed by mid-August, after which partial traffic restrictions will remain in place for several more days. The works will cover the D3 motorway between Svrčinovec and Skalité, located just before the Zwardoń-Skalité border crossing. This section is used by both international traffic and transport operators travelling towards Žilina, Bratislava, the Czech Republic and Hungary.
According to the National Motorway Company (NDS), the Svrčinovec and Poľana tunnels, as well as the Čadečka Bridge, will all be renovated simultaneously. Road workers will replace the pavement inside the tunnels, repair expansion joints, service the safety systems and carry out structural works on the bridge. Road signage and roadside equipment will also be renewed. Combining all works into a single project will help avoid further closures of this section in the coming years.
According to information provided by the Žilina Regional Police:
• 12 July, 23:00 – introduction of the new traffic organisation,
• 13 July – 16 August – complete closure of the D3 Svrčinovec-Skalité section,
• from 17 August – final stage of works with partial traffic restrictions.
During the closure, traffic will be diverted via national roads:
➡️ Direction Čadca → Poland: the diversion will follow Road I/11 via Svrčinovec – Zátky, from where drivers will be able to rejoin the D3 motorway.
➡️ Direction Poland → Svrčinovec: drivers will be diverted to Road I/12. A restriction for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes applies on this route, therefore transport operators should check in advance whether transit is possible under the temporary traffic arrangements.
So far, NDS has not published an official diversion map or the temporary traffic management plan. Should these documents become available before the works begin, we will update this article with detailed diversion diagrams.
