How extreme heat affects mental health and what experts recommend
FORT MYERS, Fla. —
Doctors are warning that extreme heat can affect mental health, leading to stress, irritability, and anxiety.
Experts recommend drinking plenty of water, cooling down with a cold washcloth, or taking a shower. They also suggest staying hydrated by eating frozen grapes, popsicles, or cucumbers.
“Anything that is going to help to cool down your bedroom is going to be a game changer for your sleep and your mood during the heat,” said Susan Albers, a psychologist at Cleveland Clinic.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children, elders, and people with pre-existing mental health conditions are more vulnerable during extreme heat.
