Artificial intelligence is making scams more convincing than ever, and cybersecurity experts say it’s becoming harder to tell what’s real.

Andres Torres, a Reno-based U.S. Marine Corps master sergeant and owner of ZeroDay Cybersecurity joined ARC Reno to demonstrate how AI can mimic a person’s voice using only a short audio sample. During the interview, he showed how the technology can recreate someone’s speech patterns, tone and mannerisms, making fraudulent phone calls sound remarkably authentic.

He encouraged people to slow down whenever they receive urgent or emotional requests involving money or sensitive information. Instead of trusting a phone call alone, he recommends verifying the request through a second communication method, such as a direct text message or separate phone call.
