LEBANON, N.H. (WCAX) – A Dartmouth Health expert says there are steps people can take to avoid getting sick as a parasite-linked diarrhea outbreak spreads across 34 states.

Health officials believe cases in West Virginia and Kentucky are linked to the outbreak in Michigan and Ohio. Cases have been identified in 34 states since May 1, but instances in those four states are believed to have come from the same source. Experts say it is also likely that additional cases are not being reported.

Dr. Gabriela Andujar Vazquez of Dartmouth Health said there are things people can do to keep from getting sick.

“Wash all of our fresh produce thoroughly under running water because that takes the spores out of that produce and then leaves it in the sink. Washing our hands before and after preparing any food helps prevent any transmission of it. And then making sure we’re drinking water that is treated,” she said.

The doctor added that if someone does get sick and experiences symptoms, they should seek medical attention because there is a cure for it.
