The presidential office on Thursday convened a meeting of the National Security Council(NSC) to discuss key trade and security issues between South Korea and the United States.
Presiding over the NSC standing committee meeting, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said that amid growing uncertainties in the external environment, the government needs to coordinate response measures to protect national interests based on a shared understanding.
Wi added that given the close link between trade and security in the Seoul-Washington alliance, relevant government agencies need to work closely together to further advance bilateral ties.
The presidential office said officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, and the Fair Trade Commission also attended the meeting to review major pending issues, along with U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Kang Kyung-wha, who briefly returned home the previous day.
The committee reportedly discussed a wide range of trade cooperation issues between Seoul and Washington, including progress in talks on South Korean investment in the United States.
Attention is also drawn on whether the Coupang issue was discussed during the meeting.
