It may not have the celebrity glamour of Portofino or the international fame of the French Riviera, but one stunning Croatian destination has just beaten them all.
Cavtat and the picturesque Konavle region have been crowned Europe’s Most Elegant Coastal Destination for 2026, topping a list of more than 200 seaside destinations from across the continent.
The prestigious recognition, awarded by the travel platform European Best Destinations, saw the Croatian gem finish ahead of some of Europe’s most iconic coastal locations, including Portofino in Italy, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera, the Greek island of Hydra, and Spain’s postcard-perfect Cadaqués.
The judges praised Cavtat for its timeless elegance, charming waterfront promenade, distinctive Mediterranean architecture and the seamless blend of rich history with first-class tourism facilities.
But the award isn’t just about the town itself.
The neighbouring Konavle region was recognised for its rolling vineyards, traditional villages, outstanding local cuisine and award-winning wineries, offering visitors an authentic taste of Croatia far from the crowds found in many of Europe’s better-known holiday hotspots.
The title is another major boost for tourism in southern Croatia, where local authorities have spent years promoting sustainable tourism while carefully preserving the area’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
As more travellers seek destinations that offer authenticity, tranquillity and quality rather than overcrowded beaches, Cavtat and Konavle appear to have struck exactly the right balance.
For locals, the award is more than just another trophy—it is international recognition that one of Croatia’s most beautiful corners has firmly established itself among Europe’s finest coastal destinations.
