President Lee Jae Myung has arrived in Brazil on a four-day state visit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Soon after landing in Brasília Sunday, local time, Lee inspected Brazilian jet manufacturer Embraer’s C-390 military transport plane at an Air Force base, three of which will be delivered to South Korea starting December under a deal worth 883 billion won, or around 604 million U.S. dollars.
Lee is set to hold summit talks with his Brazilian counterpart Monday on ways to further enhance bilateral exchange and cooperation, based on their sense of closeness built from a shared experience as former child laborers.
The president will then travel to Sao Paulo to meet with Korean residents there and to preside over a business roundtable attended by business leaders from both countries.
Lee is also scheduled to make an official visit to Chile on Thursday and Argentina on Friday for meetings with Chilean President José Antonio Kast and Argentinian President Javier Milei.
Earlier, national security adviser Wi Sung-lac said Lee’s trip can be expected to help establish economic security partnerships with the three South American countries, which have abundant natural resources, and to expand South Korea’s diplomatic horizons to the Global South.
