Two four-hour systems to support the Romanian grid

    According to Alcemi, the facilities would help alleviate constraints on Romania’s electricity grid and support the integration of intermittent renewable energy. The four-hour configuration would allow output to be smoothed and demand peaks to be met. This type of sizing is found in other recent European projects, such as the 240 MWh storage agreement signed between BNZ and Sungrow in Italy. The company has not specified a commissioning timeline for the Medgidia and Șura Mare sites.

    A partnership with local developers to speed up delivery

    James Forster, co-founder of Alcemi, said the partnership with Andrei and Emil Pop provides the on-the-ground expertise needed to navigate Romania’s regulatory and grid interconnection landscape. He added that the collaboration would allow the company to move quickly while ensuring projects remain aligned with local market conditions and community priorities. According to Forster, Alcemi views Romania as a key market for battery storage deployment.

    Emil Pop, for his part, said the partnership with Alcemi brings the scale, technical rigor and financial backing needed to bring these projects to construction. He emphasized the importance, for a developer working on the ground in Romania, of pairing strong local relationships with an investor who understands the market. Both parties present the alliance as complementary, combining local expertise with international investment capacity.
