President Lee Jae Myung’s top security aide says South Korea is considering various ways to practically contribute toward restoring stability in the Strait of Hormuz, but that no concrete plan has been finalized.
Speaking to reporters in Buenos Aires on Friday during the president’s South American tour, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac noted that while consultations with the United States are underway, Washington has not yet made a specific request.
Wi said Washington is “sounding out” how Seoul can contribute toward free passage in the strait, adding that Seoul is internally reviewing potential forms of participation, which could require building a consensus with the National Assembly and the public.
Earlier, a local daily reported that Washington had asked Seoul to deploy a warship to the energy chokepoint amid its renewed conflict with Iran, which was later denied by the presidential office.
Regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s latest claim that Russia had used a North Korean missile in a strike on his country, Wi said Pyongyang and Moscow’s military cooperation violates a relevant UN Security Council resolution and that Seoul’s position is that it must stop.
