Serbia’s students and their professors may have been prompted to protest by the lack of accountability for the fatal collapse of an outdoor canopy at a railway station in late 2024, but their talking points have since broadened considerably. Not without risk.
At a recent rally in the central Serbian town of Kraljevo, the main theme was not their demand for elections, for a proper fight against corruption, or for the rule of law to finally apply to all.
It was Kosovo.
“We live in difficult times because those who rule over us can imagine a Serbia without Kosovo and Metohija, without clean drinking water, without justice, without humanity, kindness and freedom,” said one the speakers, Nemanja Karovic, an assistant professor at the teacher training faculty of the University of Belgrade.
