HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The Huntington Fire Department has released new information about a man that was found dead after a fire in Huntington Wednesday morning.
Firefighters say they responded to a reported structure fire on Norway Avenue at 10:57 a.m. Wednesday.
They say crews arrived on scene at 11:02 a.m., where they saw a fire within a single-family residence.
One man was found dead inside the home around 11:05 a.m., firefighters say.
The victim’s identity is not being released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
Firefighters also say the fire was quickly brought under control and was largely confined to a single room, with limited damage to the rest of the home.
The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the the City of Huntington Fire Prevention Bureau and the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Huntington Police Department, West Virginia State Police, and Cabell County EMS assisted the scene.
Huntington Fire Chief Christopher Blanton gave the following statement:
“Today is a tragic day for our community and for the members of the Huntington Fire Department. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
I am extremely proud of the professionalism displayed by our firefighters and all our public safety partners. From dispatch to arrival in just five minutes, our crews operated with urgency, discipline, and compassion. Their coordinated efforts quickly confined the fire to a single room, preventing further damage to the residence.
While today’s outcome is tragic, I want to thank every responder who worked together seamlessly under difficult circumstances. We ask the public to keep everyone affected by this incident in their thoughts as the investigation continues.”
The Huntington Fire Department reminds all residents to ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of their home, tested monthly, and that every family has and practices a home fire escape plan.”
