MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa (WOWT) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is inviting the public to give feedback on environmental activities happening at a former defense missile site at Offutt Air Force Base.

The meeting will also allow the public to see updated groundwater plume maps and results from updated study samples.

“Missile Site 3 was used as an Atlas ‘D’ Missile Site for the potential launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles until it was deactivated in 1964,” Thursday’s release states. “The purpose of the environmental activities is to determine the presence and extent of contamination from Cold War missile defense activities.”

Next week’s public meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rand Community Center, located at 100 S. Fourth St. in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with posterboards on display for those who want a closer look at the information ahead of the formal presentation.

At the meeting, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representatives plan to review the site’s history as well as share environmental investigation activities that have happened there since.

They also expect to provide pilot study results, results from ongoing sampling activities, updated groundwater plume maps, and plans for the upcoming vapor intrusion investigation as well as schedules for other short- and long-term projects to come at the site.
