Maine ACA health insurance premiums to rise nearly 15% in 2027

AUGUSTA, Maine —

Mainers who buy their own health insurance will see premiums rise sharply next year, with state regulators approving an average increase of 14.8% for the individual market.

Small employers will also pay more, with rates rising an average of 13.5%.

The increases take effect Jan. 1, 2027. The Maine Bureau of Insurance said higher medical costs, prescription drug prices and provider expenses are driving the increases.

Insurers had sought even larger hikes of 16.8% for individual plans and 15.7% for small-group coverage.

“While these final increases are lower than insurers initially requested, we know they will still be difficult for Maine people and small businesses,” acting Insurance Superintendent Timothy Schott said.

Maine’s individual insurance market covers roughly 65,000 people, primarily through CoverME.gov, the state’s Affordable Care Act marketplace. More than 70% of marketplace customers receive advance premium tax credits that lower what they pay.

Consumers are being urged to compare plans carefully before choosing coverage for 2027.
