WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Road construction on Memorial Avenue is leaving some business owners on edge with the Big E less than a month away.
Crews recently repaved sidewalks along the avenue but the owner of Memo’s Restaurant says the job left an inch-deep ledge right where customers walk. He says it’s now sitting on his property which means it’s his liability and he’s already planning to call the city.
“I’m not happy with it,“ said Memo’s owner Dom Pompi. “Like I said, this is a problem.”
The Big E responded to the construction and the frustration it’s causing, saying in part “Eastern States Exposition has been coordinating with local and state officials, law enforcement and project representatives to manage traffic changes related to construction on Memorial Avenue.”
Sidewalks should be complete by the time the fair starts, according to the Big E, and construction will be halted beforehand.
Pompi said he’s also worried about the road’s new three-lane design once Big E traffic hits, saying it could undo years of work to ease congestion in the area.
