The deputy speaker recalled that UN Security Council Resolution 1244 remains the foundation of Serbia’s position on Kosovo and Metohija. She also stressed that Pristina has failed for 13 years to meet the obligations it took on under the Brussels Agreement, above all the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, a mechanism agreed back in 2013 that still has not been established.
Ragus also briefed her counterpart on the political situation in Serbia ahead of the upcoming elections, noting that the vote will be monitored by an OSCE observer mission. The meeting also touched on the Strategic Dialogue between Serbia and the United States, the mechanism through which the two sides work to strengthen bilateral relations.
What is Washington saying?
According to the National Assembly statement, the US Embassy representative said Washington considers it important for Serbia to find solutions that contribute to progress and stability, and that the United States will continue to support the further course of the Strategic Dialogue. She added that Washington is interested in Serbia’s election process and expects the vote to be conducted in line with democratic standards.
The meeting comes at a moment when the presence of KFOR at the bridge on the Ibar in Mitrovica, long the dividing line between the Serb and Albanian parts of the city, was for the first time raised directly with a US diplomat in this format of talks. The National Assembly did not say whether, or when, a follow up meeting on the issue has been scheduled.
