In July 2026, the cost of fuels and lubricants for private transportation across the European Union climbed 16.9% compared with the same month a year earlier, as reported by Eurostat. Among the bloc’s 27 member states, 25 saw higher prices relative to July 2025.
Romania led with the largest year-on-year jump at 24.2%, followed by Germany and Lithuania, each up 22.9%, Bulgaria at 22.2%, the Netherlands at 22.0%, and Finland at 20.5%. Hungary was the only country to see a dip, albeit marginal at 0.1%, while Sweden and Ireland registered the mildest gains at 1.2% and 3.2%, respectively.
The July figure came after annual increases of 20.7% in May and 13.7% in June, with July’s pace trailing May’s in 24 nations. On a month-over-month basis, diesel advanced 4.3% in July, and petrol moved up 4.7%, marking a reversal from the declines seen in June.
Diesel costs rose in 17 EU countries, with Poland posting the sharpest monthly gain at 13.4%, followed by Germany at 12.7% and Greece at 12.1%. Nine nations saw diesel prices drop, most notably Cyprus, Sweden, and Ireland. Petrol prices increased in 14 countries and decreased in 12, with Poland again leading at 17.2%, Germany at 11.0%, and Spain at 7.1%. Sweden experienced the steepest fall at 11.1%.
