IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) – Some Iredell County schools are using A.I. now in their first aid kits. They include life-saving technology with step-by-step instructions to help school resource officers and staff in emergencies.
The new A.I. powered first aid kits are a first in the district.
School resource officers and school staff say it’s a necessary addition to keep everyone safe.
“As soon as it opens up, it’s automatically powered up. It’s automatically set to this screen right here that you start answering questions,” said Lt. Eric Finch with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
This year any school with an Iredell County Sheriffs Office school resource officer now has a “Mobilize Comprehensive Trauma Kit” to use in an emergency.
“It allows students to be able to help out in time of an emergency or staff or somebody that’s not medically trained,” Lt. Finch explains. “They can help out at any instant, grab this kit and they can go to the scene and they can be effective.”
The A.I. powered gear is fully stocked and labeled telling a user what specific gear to grab depending on the injury and symptoms.
Nicholas Allen, Lake Norman High School’s principal, says this helps put his mind at ease to know they’re equipped for a worst case scenario.
“Our admin team, we’re trained for emergencies, but our staff members, you really aren’t. Having this here, instead of their basic training, they can go to this,” Allen said.
Lt. Finch said this is just another example of keeping up with evolving technology for the sake of safety.
“The schools, you never know when something could happen. Anything that we can add into the school to help somebody out or possibly save a life, we’re absolutely going to do,” he says. “We’ve made this available to anyone within the school system to be able to grab this at a split second and possibly save a life.”
Allen says these kits can be used for athletic events or any other major event on school grounds.
The sheriff’s office says the kits were completely paid for using money taken during criminal operations.
