For the period January – July this year, tourists in all types of accommodation recorded 8,85 million overnight stays, which is about 650 thousand or eight percent more than in the same period last year, according to yesterday’s Monstat data.
After two consecutive years of declining tourist overnight stays, Montenegro could break that streak this year and reach the previous record from 2023.
In these seven months, tourists spent 2,94 million nights in collective accommodation (hotels, motels, resorts, camps, etc.), which is about 70 thousand or 2,4 percent more than in the same period last year. In private accommodation this year, there were 5,91 million nights, which is 11 percent or 585 thousand nights more than in the same seven months last year.
Of the total number of overnight stays in the first seven months of this year, two-thirds or 66,8 percent were in private accommodation, which is a slightly higher percentage than last year when 64,9 percent of overnight stays were in this type of accommodation during this period.
Montenegro was visited by 1,61 million tourists during this period, which is a 7,8 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The average registered tourist stayed for 5,5 days, which is slightly longer than last year when the average was 5,46 days.
In July this year alone, there were 3,71 million overnight stays in all types of accommodation, compared to 3,37 million overnight stays in the same month last year, an increase of 10 percent. In July, 623 tourists were registered, or 11 percent more than in the same month last year.
The most frequent guests were Serbian citizens, who in the past seven months recorded 2,02 million overnight stays in all types of accommodation, which is about 250 thousand overnight stays more than last year. In other words, about 40 percent of the growth in the total number of overnight stays was achieved by guests from this country.
In second place are guests from Russia, who recorded 1,4 million overnight stays, which is about 16,4 percent of the total. Their number of overnight stays increased by 105 thousand. In the first seven months of this year, Russians recorded 1,28 million overnight stays in private accommodation, and 123 thousand in collective accommodation.
The biggest drop in visits was among guests from Turkey. This year, they recorded 248 overnight stays in all types of accommodation in the first seven months of the year, while last year the figure was 397, or a drop of 150 overnight stays.
The number of overnight stays is the basic data on which tourist traffic is measured because it is multiplied by the average tourist consumption, which has its own methodology, and thus the value of tourist traffic is obtained, which is the most significant item in Montenegrin gross domestic product.
The Ministry of Tourism announced yesterday that Monstat data confirms a record season in Montenegro and continued strong growth in tourist traffic.
“In the past two years, the Ministry of Tourism has strongly promoted Montenegro’s position towards the European and world tourism summit through its chairmanship of the World Tourism Organization’s Commission for Europe, the positions that Montenegro holds in the European Travel Commission, as well as through the fact that Montenegro, according to tourist ratings published by the European Travel Commission, was declared the best-rated tourist destination in Europe. The latest results show that such international positioning has concrete effects. Montenegro is today visited by tourists from all over the world, including markets that previously did not gravitate to our country to a significant extent. At the same time, Montenegro is exceptionally well connected to the most important European destinations by air lines, while its international reputation as a tourist destination is truly flourishing,” the statement from this ministry, led by Simonida Kordić.
This kind of growth, as they state, shows that Montenegro has great room for further development, but also that cooperation between all sectors is important.
“We call on all stakeholders in tourism “to continue to work together to improve conditions and raise the quality of the offer, so that Montenegro is ready to respond to the increasing number of tourists and their growing expectations,” the ministry stated.
Half of hotel guests in Budva
In collective hotel accommodation, 1,08 million overnight stays were recorded in July alone, which is about 40 thousand more than in the same month last year.
Almost half of the overnight stays in this type of accommodation were realized in Budva, 464 thousand, followed by Herceg Novi, 173 thousand, Bar, 153 thousand, Ulcinj, 107 thousand, Kotor, 57 thousand…
The most overnight stays in this type of accommodation in July were achieved by guests from Serbia, 247 thousand or 25 percent of the total number. Then come guests from Bosnia and Herzegovina with 73 thousand overnight stays, from Poland with 63 thousand, from Russia with 55 thousand, from Ukraine with 43 thousand, from Israel with 38 thousand, from France with 37 thousand, from Germany with 35 thousand…
