LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Kentucky Department for Public Health is warning the public of potential exposure to measles after an unvaccinated, out-of-state traveler visited multiple businesses in Richmond and Olive Hill, Kentucky, earlier this month.
According to health department officials, the infected individual visited several local establishments on August 24, August 27, and August 28, 2026.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that spreads easily through the air. Measles can cause serious health complications, particularly in infants, young children, and immunocompromised individuals.
The Cabinet for Health and Family Services warns that the virus can remain active and contagious in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person has left an area.
What to Do If You Were Exposed
If you visited establishments in Richmond or Olive Hill on the specified dates and believe you may have been exposed, health officials recommend taking the following steps:
- Check Your Immunity: Verify if you have received the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine or have documented medical proof of immunity.
- Monitor for Symptoms: Watch closely for symptoms for 21 days following your potential exposure. Key symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a characteristic rash that typically spreads from the head downward.
- Contact Your Provider Immediately: If you develop symptoms or have questions about your exposure, call your doctor or the local health department immediately. Do not visit a clinic or emergency room without calling ahead first, as this helps prevent spreading the virus to other patients.
