PONTIAC, Mich. – Kids got a sports experience they won’t soon forget this weekend. At Razmania Sports Festival, young fans had the chance to meet their sports heroes, participate in youth drills and explore the world of trading cards.
The event was designed to make athletes more accessible — no front-row ticket required.
“It’s like going to the Super Bowl. I want these kids to meet Jared Goff. He’s going to be on stage talking about his early years, so is Derrick Barnes. He was in the Boys and Girls Club,” said Jason Raznick, co-founder of Razmania Sports Festival.
Athletes on, off the field
A number of collegiate and professional athletes turned out for the event — and they weren’t just talking to the kids. Some of them were playing alongside them.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff was one of the fan favorites. One young attendee made sure he came prepared.
“I’m excited to meet Jared Goff because I have a card in my pocket, right here,” said Easton Foon, a sports fan at the event.
For other young fans, the anticipation was almost too much to put into words.
“I do not know,” said Felicity Geden, a sports fan, when asked what it would be like to see Goff for the first time.
Trading cards, community, conversation
Beyond the athletes, Razmania also featured a robust trading card section, where collectors showed off — and sold — sports cards, ready to share the stories behind each one.
For young sports enthusiasts like Emery Roop, host of the Sports Kid Podcast, the event was a natural fit.
“Probably football and the Lions,” Roop said when asked about a favorite sport and team.
Tickets were priced to be accessible for families, making the experience available to as many kids as possible.
“You know, it’s just great that someone will put this on for all of the kids, and it’s amazing that they get to meet some players — it’s great,” said Mikey Foon, who brought his children to the event.
Organizers say they hope to hold more events like this in the future.
