There’s a very good reason to explore Zagreb this September – it won’t cost you a cent.
The Zagreb Tourist Board is bringing back its popular “Get to Know Your City” programme, offering an impressive 31 free guided tours across the Croatian capital between September 5 and 27.
Taking place every Saturday and Sunday, the walks will uncover everything from Zagreb’s colourful characters and literary legends to mysterious stories hidden behind the façades of the historic Upper Town.
And there’s something for younger explorers too, with special interactive tours designed for children aged six to 11 and their families.
Discover the Zagreb You Thought You Knew
“Zagreb can always be rediscovered, no matter how long we have lived here,” said Zagreb Tourist Board director Martina Bienenfeld.
This year’s programme features five different themed experiences, each revealing another layer of the city.
In the Shadow of the Upper Town Façades is a costumed walk through some of Zagreb’s lesser-known stories, mixing history with intriguing and humorous tales from the past.
Stories from Old Zagreb focuses on the celebrated Mažuranić family and the mark they left on the capital.
Literature lovers can follow in the footsteps of one of Croatia’s most important writers with Son of Zagreb, a tour commemorating the 145th anniversary of the death of August Šenoa.
Zagreb Adventures for Children
Families haven’t been forgotten.
Zagorka’s Key to Secrets introduces children to pioneering Croatian writer and journalist Marija Jurić Zagorka, with legends and mysteries woven into an interactive adventure.
Meanwhile, Zagreb Carousel uses costumed guides, games, riddles and storytelling to introduce youngsters to the city’s landmarks and history.
The programme concludes on September 27 – World Tourism Day, celebrating not only Zagreb’s heritage but also the residents who help give the city its character.
All tours are completely free, although advance registration is compulsory as group sizes are limited.
Bookings are accepted on Fridays for tours taking place that weekend.
So whether you’re a lifelong resident convinced you’ve seen everything Zagreb has to offer, or simply fancy discovering a few secrets hiding around the next corner, September could be the perfect time to play tourist in the Croatian capital – without spending a euro.
