BRATTLEBORO — Classics at the Latchis returns this Friday, Sept. 4, at 8 p.m. with a screening of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” the 1951 classic directed by Elia Kazan and starring Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden. The screening will take place in the historic Main Theatre and is presented by Sages and Latchis Arts. Admission is $10, $8 for seniors and students, and tickets are available at the door.
Based on Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “A Streetcar Named Desire” follows Blanche DuBois, who arrives in New Orleans to stay with her sister Stella and her husband, Stanley Kowalski. The encounter between Blanche and Stanley sparks conflict marked by desire, violence, class and the fragile line between reality and illusion.
The film received 12 Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars, including Best Actress for Vivien Leigh, Best Supporting Actor for Karl Malden and Best Supporting Actress for Kim Hunter. Brando was also nominated.
This is the fourth presentation of Classics at the Latchis, a series created to bring great films back to the experience of the big screen. The series included “Casablanca,” “Now, Voyager” and “Sunset Boulevard.” For more information, visit latchis.com.
