Finland plans to extend through the end of 2028 a border
security law that allows it to keep its land border with Russia closed,
Finland’s Interior Ministry reported.
The ministry said the law is intended to “counter pressure
on Finland, strengthen border security and prepare for the most serious cases
involving the instrumentalization of migration.”
The restrictions could remain in effect at least through
Dec. 31, 2028.
“Finland will take decisive action to ensure border
security. Thanks to this law, we are prepared for border authorities to act
effectively in the most difficult situations involving engineered migration,”
Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said.
The Border Guard said the situation involving engineered
migration has not changed significantly since 2025, when the law was last
extended. The updated law is to take effect no later than Dec. 31, 2026.
In November 2023, the Finnish government decided to close
Raja-Jooseppi, the last remaining crossing on its eastern border with Russia.
The entire land border with Russia was then closed.
