NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – Sophia Klein has announced she is withdrawing her name from the race for the Ward 1 seat on the North Platte City Council, pointing to an increasingly hostile local political climate as her primary reason for stepping down.
Klein’s exit leaves longtime representative Jim Nisley unchallenged in his re-election bid for the Ward 1 seat.
In a statement shared publicly, Klein expressed that while she initially ran out of a deep love for the community and a desire for positive change, the current local political landscape has become too volatile.
“Over the last several months, I have also gotten a much closer look at the political environment locally,” Klein wrote. “I’ve watched the growing anger, accusations and hostility.”
Klein raised concerns about the personal toll of public service, noting that the tension surrounding local recall efforts and growing distrust of leadership made her question whether she wanted to expose her family and business to that environment.
“I do not want me or my family publicly shamed for making a decision not everyone is on board with,” Klein stated. “Lately it hasn’t stopped with the person who holds the position. Their families, businesses and livelihoods have had to suffer as well. I’m not willing to ask my family to possibly be subjected to that.”
While emphasizing that elected officials should always be held accountable, Klein drew a line between constructive oversight and personal attacks.
“Accountability and cruelty are not the same thing,” Klein wrote. “If our community reaches a place where anyone willing to serve knows that one unpopular decision could result in their character being attacked… eventually good people simply won’t run.”
Klein had originally planned to announce her withdrawal during Tuesday’s scheduled candidate forum but chose to make the announcement early to avoid disrupting the event. She noted her decision to run was never about Nisley doing a bad job, writing that “he hasn’t and I know he will continue to serve our community well.”
Moving forward, Klein says she plans to remain involved in North Platte in other ways.
With Klein’s departure, the attention of North Platte voters shifts to the remaining competitive council races:
- Ward 3: Timothy Sanders, Scott Young, and Jim Riewe are vying for the seat currently held by Brian Flanders.
- Ward 4: Tracy J. Martinez, Ed Rieker, and Chester Smith will face off, with voters narrowing the field to two during the May primary before the November general election.
