John Gibbons — who passed away this past offseason on April 4 — will be honored with a tribute show Sept. 14 during Charlie Malta’s “Mondays With Malta” radio show.
Gibbons was the former Lake Catholic head football coach who built the Cougars into a state power with back-to-back state championships in 1991 and 1992.
Gibbons also won eight conference titles before moving on to St. Edward, where he led the Eagles to seven straight playoff appearances and a Division I state runner-up finish in 2003.
He later returned to Lake Catholic as an assistant under his son Marty, who is the current head coach for the Cougars.
The Sept. 14 show will be held at The Happy Moose (7693 Reynolds Rd.) in Mentor from 7 to 9 p.m. It will be hosted by Malta, John O’Connell and Tom Gibbons, another son of John who was the former Euclid head coach and currently an assistant at Lake Catholic with his brother Marty.
The show can be heard live on WINT-FM 101.5, WINT-AM 1330 and wintradio.com.
