MICAM Milan opens with UNESCO candidacy for Italian footwear craftsmanship

    The 102nd edition of MICAM Milan took place at Fiera Milano Rho from 13 to 15 September 2026. The opening ceremony highlighted the candidacy of Italian footwear craftsmanship for inclusion on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, promoted by Assocalzaturifici.

    Officials, industry leaders and cultural figures attended the inauguration, emphasizing the cultural and economic importance of Italy’s shoemaking tradition.

    Giovanni Bozzetti was appointed chair of the Supporters Committee for the UNESCO candidacy and will lead promotional and safeguarding activities for the know-how, techniques and practices of the Italian footwear supply chain. The initiative aims to protect not a single shoe, but the people, skills and processes that make Italian footwear a hallmark of Made in Italy.

    Giovanna Ceolini, president of MICAM and Assocalzaturifici, highlighted the project’s goal to pass on these competencies to new generations while combining tradition with innovation and market needs. Organizers have also made videos, photographs and a press kit available for the opening and fair activities.
