PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Patients at Encompass Health in Panama City traded therapy sessions for a Roaring 20s-themed party this week as part of National Rehabilitation Awareness Week.
The event had popcorn, cupcakes, a photo backdrop, and crafts for patients to enjoy.
Patients at the hospital can spend hours each day working to regain strength, mobility, and independence after an illness or injury. Hospital leaders said recovery is not only physical, but also mental.
Events like this give patients a chance to socialize, laugh, and take their minds off the challenges they face. Staff members were also celebrated and thanked for their work with patients.
Tony Bennett, CEO at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital PC, said the event boosts morale for staff and patients alike.
“It is a morale booster. We try to find a reason to celebrate because we know every time we do, it lifts people’s spirits. If my employers are having a good time and they enjoy coming to work, the patients are gonna have a good time and enjoy the process,” Bennett said.
Regina Goodwill, a rehab patient, said the event helps take her mind off her recovery goals.
“It takes your mind off what you’re working toward, like being able to walk again or whatever you need to be done. I think it helps out; it makes you a bit happier and a little bit more chill in order to go into what you’re supposed to be doing,” Goodwill said.
The hospital has been celebrating National Rehabilitation Awareness Week all week following a Hollywood theme, including dressing up as their favorite celebrity. Encompass Health also has upcoming events, including its 30th anniversary.
