North Korea has launched at least one suspected ballistic missile, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported on Sunday, citing the Defence Ministry in Tokyo.
Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea had fired at least one unidentified projectile towards the East Sea of the Korean Peninsula, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported. Korea refers to the body of water as the East Sea, but Japan calls it the Sea of Japan.
North Korea last fired several short-range ballistic missiles towards the body of water on September 12. Those launches came one day after the end of a five-day military exercise involving South Korea, the United States and Japan.
North Korea regularly tests ballistic missiles and other weapons systems. Experts believe the tests serve to further develop military capabilities and demonstrate strength.
