A truck driver who rammed into people at a flea market in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, on the weekend, killing two and injuring five others, has appeared in court for a pretrial detention hearing.
The man, in his 60s, apologized for his conduct Monday morning as he was being transported to the Suwon District Court’s Pyeongtaek branch from the Pyeongtaek Police Station.
The driver is accused of causing death and injury under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents, and a court decision is expected Monday afternoon.
The man plowed into a group of people with a one-ton truck as they were preparing for the flea market at a children’s park in Anseong on Saturday morning.
A mother in her 40s and her teenage son were killed, and five others suffered injuries.
The man is a temporary contract worker hired by the Anseong city government, and police say he initially told them he’d mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, but later claimed it was a case of sudden unintended acceleration.
