    1. I feel like this is mostly expectation management. So when there’s a Tory slaughter, they can be like, ‘well… at least Sunak kept his seat…. I guess…’

He doesn’t actually care, he’ll go home his wife will pat him on the head and they’ll all move to another country and live on a private island or something while everyone struggles and blames labour for trying to fix the problems he caused and in 4 years everyone would have forgotten the last 14 because of course they will

    5. PuzzledFortune on

So many awful people will be losing their seats. There will be dozens of Portillo moments this time around. It will take a heart of stone not to laugh.

    6. I doubt he cares if he loses his seat. He can then say “look, I didn’t break my promise not to leave the UK if I won my seat!” As he swans off to America.

    7. manufan1992 on

He’s not fearful. Even if he kept his seat he would resign from being an MP anyway. He’s planning on a new life in California.

    8. Agreeable_Falcon1044 on

It’s unlikely…but definitely possible. There are very few actual safe seats, as I see some of the Lincolnshire ones are turning red too! Maybe 1997 was a prediction too far, but it does feel like this is the end of the tory party. Their voters are getting older and dying out, and they are becoming less and less relevant to the new voters.

This is why I’m staying up tomorrow. To see Sunak’s results read out. 🤞

As much as I would love to see it, the ‘anonymous source’ aspect makes me think this story is just a little bit of fantasy porn for Guardian readers.

Some of the numbskulls in his party will actually be genuinely fearful as this is the best job they will ever have. Sunak, on the other hand, has probably lost more than his salary down the back of the sofa and has half a dozen fake director of something positions lined up.

    12. It would be even better if Count Binface beat him. God I would love that so much.

    13. charlesbear on

This is a nonsense story. He will hold comfortably.

Edit: I say this in a non-partisan way. There’s just no chance he loses. The Tories more broadly on the other hand…

Should’ve done better then, eh Rishi? Should’ve maybe served the people instead of yourself and your mates, eh?

    15. Porcupine49 on

I’d be very surprised if he isn’t secretly hoping to lose his seat. If the expected wipe-out materializes, he will not survive as Tory leader and will not fancy spending the next five years as a backbencher. California beckons.

    16. pajamakitten on

That is the natural risk when you call an election. Surely every MP knows they are at risk of being unseated?

    17. Longjumping_Possible on

If nothing else, if you lived in Richmond, why would you vote for a man who will spend the entire time in California, or face another by election in a few weeks? Just cut out the middle man, and vote Labour.

    18. I’m fearful of losing my home – many many renters, and mortgage payers who’ve overextended themselves.

      Sunak did nothing to help.

    19. CthulhusEvilTwin on

What’s that look he’s trying to pull there? Wait….is it Blue Steel?

    20. DaveInLondon89 on

MRSP’s don’t account for individual candidate recognition so I doubt he’ll lose it – he’ll get more votes than the polling suggests because people like their MP being a Prime Minister.

    21. BlueBullRacing on

      Per Skybet:

      Richmond and Northallerton

      Conservatives: 1/3 odds

      Labour 9/4

Highly unlikely Rishi will lose his seat unfortunately for you lot lol.

    22. Daedelous2k on

They are all going to lose their seats, it’s going to be a labour streamroll.

    23. Why does it matter if Rishi fears anything or not? Why is this a news at all? Asking this seriously.

    24. “Oh no, I lost my seat! Guess I won’t be able to stay on in as I promised so am now free to move to California. What a terrible, terrible shame”

    25. ghost-bagel on

I guarantee they’re starting to feed these defeatist stories to the press in the hope voters get complacent and don’t turn up.

    26. The Economist’s [median prediction](https://www.economist.com/interactive/uk-general-election/forecast) for Richmond and Northallerton is 36% Con, 27% Lab, 17% Ref, 11% LD, 5% Grn, 4% Oth.

South West Norfolk (Liz) is closer: 34% Con, 29% Lab, 22% Ref, 7% LD, 5% Grn, 4% Oth.

North East Somerset (Jacob) is likely Labour win: 37% Lab, 28% Con, 15% Ref, 12% LD, 4% Grn, 3% Oth.

Ashfield (Lee) is also likely Labour win: 32% Lab, 27% Ref, 17% Oth,15% Con, 5% LD, 4% Grn.

I guarantee he fucks off to America straight away and we barely hear from him again.

    28. Welshbuilder67 on

Oh I think his multi-millionaire status along with the Billions his wife’s family has will make sure he won’t go hungry if he loses his job as a politician

    29. Seamaster1956 on

I seem to remember him giving Mr Ferrari of LBC fame his word that he would serve a full term if re-elected as an MP regardless. And I also remember Mr Ferrari reminding him of his need for honesty when answering that question vis a vis his religion.

    30. Not surprising. He’d get paid for taking the Chiltern Hundreds while losing the election is free.
