U.S. officials have met with members of the Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday told reporters at the UN headquarters that officials from the two sides had a “very good meeting” that was productive and lasted for three hours.
Trump did not give details about what was discussed, but said Iran faces a choice of “potential greatness or obliteration,” emphasizing that reaching an agreement to end the war is also advantageous for the Iranian side.
He added that another meeting will be held “in the very near future.”
U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have led negotiations with Iran, took part in the talks.
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with the U.S. team at Witkoff’s request to reiterate Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
In his speech before the UN General Assembly earlier in the day, Trump threatened to annihilate Iran if it fails to strike a deal that includes giving up its nuclear program.
Trump suggested that an agreement would be reached right after the U.S. midterm elections in November.
