President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić announced that today, September 27, he will submit resignation to the position of President of the Republic.
During his stay in New York, Vucic told reporters that he expects to resign around 8:00 p.m., when, as he announced, he should explain his decision.
Vučić previously announced his resignation on September 14, when he said that he would leave the office of president on September 27 and then, as an ordinary citizen, participate in the election campaign. Then he announced a tour of towns and villages throughout Serbia and talks with citizens.
On the eve of today’s resignation, Vučić wrote on his Instagram account that it was his “greatest honor” to be the president of Serbia.
“Being president of Serbia was the greatest honor for me. I tried to do my best every day, to justify the trust shown and to serve my country faithfully and loyally. Long live Serbia!”, said Vučić.
Vučić has held the position of President of Serbia since 2017, and won a second presidential mandate in the 2022 elections.
The resignation of the President of the Republic is a formal legal step after which the procedure for electing a new head of state is initiated. Vučić previously said that the function of acting president should be taken over by the then president of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabić.
