Traffic congestion is building on highways across the country as more vehicles head back to the capital region on the final day of the Chuseok holiday.
According to the Korea Expressway Corporation, as of noon Sunday, the estimated travel time to Seoul was six hours from Busan, four hours and 30 minutes from Gwangju, three hours and 20 minutes from Gangneung, and two hours and 20 minutes from Daejeon.
Traffic on southbound highways remained relatively smooth.
From Seoul, the estimated travel times were five hours and 10 minutes to Busan, three hours and 20 minutes to Gwangju, two hours and 40 minutes to Gangneung, and one hour and 30 minutes to Daejeon.
About five-point-24 million vehicles were expected to be on the roads Sunday, including 370-thousand traveling toward the Seoul metropolitan area and 490-thousand heading away from the capital.
Traffic heading toward Seoul was expected to peak around 4 p.m. and gradually ease after 10 p.m.
