More than 600 athletes from 31 countries are set to descend on Għadira Bay this weekend as Malta hosts OCEANMAN for the first time.

Taking place on 3rd October, OCEANMAN Malta forms part of what organisers describe as the world’s largest open-water swimming series, with Olympic-level competitors among those expected to take part.

Race Director Bernard Farrugia described the event as a landmark moment for local swimming, giving Maltese athletes the chance to compete alongside international swimmers without having to travel abroad.

Among the Maltese names taking part are Nicky Farrugia and Fabio Spiteri, who will tackle the flagship 10km OCEANMAN race, while Olympian Sasha Gatt will compete in the 5km HALF OCEANMAN.

The event will remain entirely within Għadira Bay, allowing spectators to follow the races from the shoreline. Distances range from the 10km main event and 5km race to a 2km sprint, 500m kids race and 3x500m team relay.

Farrugia said bringing OCEANMAN to Malta grew out of efforts to safeguard and strengthen the local open-water swimming scene, with discussions about hosting the international series beginning in April 2025.

Safety buoys will be mandatory for every swimmer, while wetsuits will not be permitted due to Malta’s warm October sea temperatures.

Red Cross Malta and the Emergency Response & Rescue Corps will also support safety operations throughout the event.

“Together, let us showcase Malta at its very best and demonstrate what can be achieved through passion, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence,” Farrugia said.
