The Polish Ministry of Infrastructure is preparing amendments to aviation legislation that would significantly increase fines for passengers who violate rules of conduct at airports and on board aircraft, with the maximum penalty rising from 500 zlotys (about 5,400 UAH) to 5,000 zlotys (about 54,000 UAH).
Government officials explain the need for reform by noting that the current level of fines no longer corresponds to the extent of public harm caused by the actions of offenders. An example of such incidents was a dispute between a married couple and the crew during a flight from Malta to Warsaw over passenger seating arrangements, which ended in a court proceeding and the imposition of a fine of 500 zlotys (about 5,400 UAH) and 340 zlotys (approximately 3,700 UAH) in court costs for each of them. The proposed changes will address failure to comply with the captain’s orders, as well as violations of established rules and prohibitions at airports.
In addition to increasing passenger liability, the bill provides for simplifying the requirements for hiring airport security personnel in accordance with general European Union standards, as well as strengthening inspections of companies that provide ground services at critical infrastructure facilities.
