Al-Sharaa held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a visit to Riyadh as the Houthis escalated their attacks on Saudi Arabia and warned international airlines against using Saudi airspace. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said his forces had launched a ballistic missile at the Abha airport in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern province of Asir, disrupting air traffic.
Yahya Saree warned international airlines against operating flights in Saudi airspace, saying “it has become a theater for our military operations, with the exception of the airspace over the sacred areas in Mecca al-Mukarramah and Medina al-Munawwarah.” The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said Tuesday the attacks damaged the airports and left at least three people injured.
Saudi Press Agency said the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and “promising opportunities for developing these relations in various fields.” The meeting also covered the latest developments in the region and several senior Saudi officials including Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman attended.
Al-Sharaa was accompanied by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shibani and was first received by the Governor of the Riyadh region, Prince Faisal bin Bandar. The visit came as hostilities between the kingdom and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis escalated, with Saudi Arabia announcing that airports in Jizan and Najran had been attacked, injuring three people and causing limited damage.
