Albania’s largest privately owned solar park is to add a 130 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) as the country seeks to expand renewable generation and strengthen its electricity system, equipment supplier Sungrow said on October 6.
Albania relies heavily on hydropower for electricity generation, making output vulnerable to fluctuations in rainfall. The addition of battery storage is intended to provide greater flexibility as solar generation expands.
Sungrow has signed an agreement with Albanian companies Matrix Konstruksion and Blessed Investment Group for Project Blue, which will have 185 MWp of solar capacity and 130 MWh of battery storage, the companies said.
The project is being developed without government subsidies and will use 26 PowerTitan 2.0 battery units and 13 medium-voltage transformer stations supplied by Sungrow.
“Project Blue demonstrates how strong partnerships, innovative technologies, and a clear vision can accelerate the deployment of renewable energy at scale,” said Massimo Bracchi, Sungrow’s country manager for Italy.
The companies said a second phase would add another 164 MWp of solar capacity and an 80 MW/180 MWh battery system, taking total planned solar capacity to 349 MWp.
The project is jointly owned and developed by Matrix Konstruksion and Blessed Investment Group.
“Project Blue reflects our commitment to building high-quality energy infrastructure that creates lasting value for Albania and the entire region,” said Shaqir Tuda, head of procurement at Matrix Konstruksion.
