More than 20,000 Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) members are kicking off their industrial action ahead of a nationwide public sector strike.

From today, they’ll refuse to answer work calls and emails outside their contracted working hours, they’ll not use their own devices and those at secondary level will withdraw from ‘Croke Park Hours’/hours outside their normal timetable. (ASTI began their action last Monday, 5th Oct).

TUI General Secretary Michael Gillespie says 98% of those balloted backed industrial action, amid frustration over the Government’s failure to negotiate a new pay deal.

On Wednesday, they’ll join other unions across the education, health, prison and other public sectors in staging a 24 hour work stoppage with a second mooted for 21st Oct.
