Today’s vote on constitutional changes, which relate to the integrity check of the highest officials of the executive branch, is crucial and could determine whether Montenegro will stay on track to complete accession negotiations this year, an EU official told “Vijesti”.
“Further delays would put Montenegro’s European future in question. The current momentum in the accession process enjoys strong support from EU institutions and member states, but this support cannot be taken for granted indefinitely,” the official said, responding to a question about how important it is for Montenegro to initiate the procedure for adopting the constitutional amendments necessary for the provisional closure of negotiating Chapter 23 (Judiciary and Fundamental Rights) and what will happen if that procedure is not initiated this month.
He warns that this is a much more important issue than party divisions.
“It is about ensuring Montenegro’s European future and a European quality of life for its citizens. Every MP should carry out their constitutional mandate independently, vote in accordance with their own beliefs and put the long-term interests of the citizens of Montenegro first,” he said.
An EU official said that the proposed framework for integrity checks is aligned with the highest European standards and agreed with the European Commission.
It says that the European Commission remains open to discussions on possible improvements with stakeholders in Montenegro and will support any solution that emerges from the inter-party dialogue, enjoys broad political support and meets the key recommendations of the Venice Commission and the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO).
